Kabul, August 26: Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Wednesday he was “deeply saddened” by the death of US Senator Edward Kennedy.
Kennedy, 77, passed away late Tuesday at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts after battling brain cancer, his family said.
“President Karzai offers his condolences and sympathies to the Kennedy family and the people of the United States of America,” a statement released by his office said.
According to initial vote counts, Karzai narrowly leads the polls following Thursday’s presidential elections in Afghanistan.
