New Delhi, October 06: Krishna Paksh of Kartika is called Karva Chauth. Married women offer prayer to Lord Ganesha to please him for the well being of their husbands. Women give some donation also. There are two stories of Karva chauth. After hearing one of the stories, women offer arghya and break their fast.
Story 1: There was a blind old lady. She had a son and daughter-in-law. The family was very poor. The old lady used to offer prayers to Lord Ganesha everyday. Lord Ganesha used to ask the old lady, mai ask for, whatever you need. Lord Ganesha said demand after asking your son and daughter-in-law.
They told the lady that she should ask for the wealth. After that the lady sought neighbours advice on the issue. They advised her to ask for regaining her lost vision so that she could see the world. The lady gave a thought to the advices during night.
Next day, when Lord Ganesha came and said,” What do you want old lady? Whatever will you ask for, you will get.” The lady told Lord Ganesha, “if you are pleased, give me wealth, good health, vision in eyes, everlasting auspicious state of wifehood, bless me with grandson and liberation after my end.
After hearing her words, Lord Ganesha said, ” Buddhi Mai, you cheated me. But all your demands are fulfilled.” After that Lord Ganesha disappeared.
O Lord Ganesha, as you showered blessings on the old lady so bless others and me as well.
Story 2:There was a beautiful princess Veeravati. She had seven brothers. When she was of the marriageable age, Veeravati was married to a king. After her marriage, she visited her parents on the occasion of the first Karva Chauth.
After the sunrise, she observed a strict fast. As the fast was rigours, the queen fainted in the evening. After seeing her condition, her brothers decided to end her fast by deceiving her.
They burn something at the nearby hill and asked their sister to see the glow. They assured her that it was the moonlight and since the moon had risen, she could break her fast.
