Karthik sent in as cover for injured Dhoni

Kanpur, November 23: Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik was rushed in as cover for the injured Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who hurt his finger ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka here.

The injury, which Dhoni sustained during the drawn opening Test in Ahmedabad, is not very serious and the Indian captain is expected to take field tomorrow.

Tamil Nadu captain Karthik was in Dharamshala for the Ranji Trophy tie against Himachal Pradesh when he was asked to come in as a back-up for Dhoni yesterday.

The Indian captain did not look in much pain at the training session and batted comfortably at the nets. The BCCI however, chose to call up Karthik although Dhoni is likely to play tomorrow and it is also expected that left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha could also be released for Hyderabad’s Ranji Trophy match.

It was in March against New Zealand this year that Karthik last played for India. Dhoni meanwhile, played a crucial knock in the drawn Test at Ahmedabad and struck a century to ressurect Indian innings when the home team was tottering at 32 for four on the first session of the opening day.
