Karnataka: Farmer commits suicide after panchayat slaps Rs 2 lakh fine

Mysuru: A farmer from a nearby village who recently attempted suicide after the panchayat allegedly imposed a Rs two lakh fine on him for arguing with a ‘drum beater’ (man who spreads information), has died, police said.

According to the complaint filed by the family of Siddaramegowda (56) of D Salgundi village, he had an argument with the drum-beater for not beating it in front of his house.

Police said this issue had gone to the panchayat, which ‘convicted’ the farmer and slapped a Rs two lakh fine on him,

Shocked by the panchayat’s verdict he attempted suicide on July 12 and was rushed to a hospital. He passed away yesterday.

Police said villagers had told them that the panchayat had not imposed any fine on the farmer.

They said efforts are on to nab five persons allegedly involved in the case, who are absconding.
