Kapil Dev to get C.K. Nayudu lifetime award

Former India captain Kapil Dev has been nominated for the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

“The Board’s award committee, comprising its president N. Srinivasan, secretary Sanjay Patel and senior journalist Ayaz Memon, met here Wednesday to nominate a winner. It was unanimously decided to nominate Mr. Kapil Dev Nikhanj for the award,” said a BCCI statement.

Kapil was the first player to complete the ‘double’ of 5,000 runs and 400 wickets in Tests. In an illustrious career that commenced in 1978 and concluded in 1994, he represented India in 131 Tests, from which he took 434 wickets. He also scored 5,248 runs, inclusive of eight centuries. He played 225 ODIs, in which he took 253 wickets and scored 3,783 runs.

His most memorable contribution to Indian cricket was leading the team to victory in the 1983 World Cup. As captain, Kapil led from the front, with bat, ball and in the field, as the Indian cricket team won the sport’s ultimate prize for the very first time.
