Lucknow: The Congress on Saturday demanded that the case of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who is booked on charges of sedition, should be transferred to a non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled state of either Uttar Pradesh or Bihar, so that the truth in the case is revealed.
“The role of the Delhi Police in the case of Kanhaiya Kumar is shameful and unfortunate. I demand that Kanhaiya’s case be transferred to Uttar Pradesh or Bihar, in a non- BJP ruled state. He will get bail, but the truth should also get revealed,” Congress leader Pramod Tiwari told ANI.
“False allegations have been levelled against him that he raised anti-national slogans. Today, everything has been revealed that both the tape and the allegations were false,” he added.
The investigation into alleged ‘anti-national’ slogans raised on Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus earlier this month has been transferred to the Delhi Police Special Cell.
The move to transfer the case to the unit that probes terror cases came on the day three JNU students arrested so far were questioned together.
The order includes the names of all the three students – JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya – with their age and addresses.
While Kanhaiya was arrested on February 12 from the JNU campus, Khalid and Bhattacharya were arrested after they surrendered before the police last week.
Kanhaiya was sent back to the Tihar jail by a Delhi court on completion of a day’s police remand.
Kumar was sent back to judicial custody, which will end on March 2, after the police told the court they did not need his further custody.
Meanwhile, with the three-day police custody of Jawaharlal Nehru University students Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya ending today, the Delhi police will produce both of them in a makeshift court room following an order by the Delhi High Court to “maintain confidentiality” during their remand proceedings.
