Kamal Haasan says he is not against Hinduism, looks at Islam, Christianity in a similar way

Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, known for his rationalistic views, refuted charges that he is anti-Hindu in his regular column in a popular Tamil weekly news magazine, Ananda Vikatan. The actor wondered how he can be anti-Hindu when people at his home were devout Hindus.

“It is their chosen path. I am not an enemy of Hinduism. I look at Islam and Christianity in a similar way. I am not anybody’s enemy and I follow the same policy with my welfare club,” the veteran actor said.

Kamal Haasan, who will start his tour of Tamil Nadu on February 21, said he would interact with people so that there is a two-way exchange of views.

In November, the Tamil superstar was mired in controversy after alleging that right-wing Hindus have started employing terrorism to propagate their communal agenda. In his column, Haasan had said that where Hindu extremists earlier believed in holding a dialogue to push their point, they now indulged in violence.

“In the past Hindu right-wing groups would not indulge in violence, but they would hold a dialogue with the opposite parties on their arguments. But this old tactic was defeated and what they stated to do is use muscle power. They started indulging in violence.

“The right-wing can’t challenge anyone asking the question — show me, one Hindu terrorist. Terror has spread into their camp as well. Such terror activities are not going to help them in any way,” he had written at the time.
