Kalmadi sacked as IOA president; VK Malhotra will be interim president

New Delhi, April 26: Former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi has been sacked as the president of Indian Olympics Association (IOA) and senior vice-president V K Malhotra has been appointed as the interim president in his place.

In an informal meeting today, IOA board members raised no-confidence motion against tainted Suresh Kalmadi who was arrested on Monday in connection with Commonwealth Games scam.

Kalmadi, who has been the president of the IOA for 15 years, was found guilty for being involved in irregularities in the conduct of QBR held in London in 2009.

According to IOA constitution, if the president is not able to carry out his duties, the senior most member would take over the post. Since VK Malhotra was the senior vice-president, he was requested to take over the reins from Kalmadi.

Interacting with the media immediately after the IOA board meeting, Malhotra said that fresh elections would take place in an executive board meeting once all the members are present in person.

Though only six members were physically present during the informal meeting, it was learnt that most of the members were consulted over phone regarding the removal of Kalmadi.

Earlier in the day, sports minister had directed the IOA to take immediate action regarding the post of IOA president.
