Mumbai, June 21: It has been more than a year since the release of DEV D. Still, Kalki Koechlin is making news. With films like Zoya Akhtar’s ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA (with Abhay Deol), Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s MY FRIEND PINTO (with Prateek Babbar) and Arshad Warsi’s starrer SHAITAAN keeping her busy for many more months to come, Kalki surely has a lot in her kitty.
Even though she aspires to do good work by means of enacting various characters, one can be rest assured that Kalki must have been inundated with primarily those roles where she is required to play an Anglo Indian characters, mainly due to her looks. Is that a fact?
“That’s true”, agrees Kalki immediately, “I am usually offered Anglo Indian characters or the ones which are foreign. Well, one has to live with that; it’s okay. May be it would take some time for people to realise my complete potential. Then they too would start having trust in my acting capabilities and especially my Hindi diction.”
Still, due to limited notions of the Bollywood fraternity, doesn’t she feel let down that after a very good act in her debut film, she is still being looked as a foreigner? Doesn’t it bother her that there is a certain limitation in the way film makers look her?
“Honestly, it doesn’t bother me at all”, Kalki keeps a brave face here, “I would rather look at the character and where does she come from rather than worry that it is an Anglo Indian or a foreigner all over again. What is of paramount importance for me is to have the right story and the right character. Now whether this character looks like a foreigner or Indian is something which is secondary. It’s the background that counts most.”
