Hyderabad, June 18: The Andhra Pradesh government today gave its nod for renaming Kadapa as ‘YSR district’ after former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.
Reddy, who was killed in a helicopter crash in the Nallamala forest range on September 2 last year, hailed from Kadapa district.
“Since the name (of the former chief minister) is too long and also since he was most popular as YSR, the Cabinet decided to rename Kadapa as YSR district,” Information and Tourism Minister J Geeta Reddy told reporters here.
The district in-charge Minister Galla Aruna Kumari suggested that the name be shortened to YSR district and the Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister K Rosaiah, approved the new name, she said, adding that a notification in this regard will be issued soon.
