Kabul warns against foreign interference

Kabul, April 23: The new head of Afghanistan’s main electoral body has warned western countries against meddling in domestic affairs of the war-stricken country.

During a swearing-in ceremony in Kabul on Thursday, Fazel Ahmed Manavi said that the donor countries should not dictate Afghan national policy.

Manavi became the new chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) after several senior officials stepped down over allegations of election fraud and vote rigging in last year’s presidential election.

Afghans will go to the polls again in September to elect a new parliament.

Manavi went on to say that his country only needs the help of US-led troops to secure the parliamentary election, however, they cannot be permitted to interfere in the country’s national policy.

Manavi, a professor of Islamic Sharia, worked as a commissioner at the IEC during last year’s presidential vote.
