The tenure of one-member Sahai Commission has once again been extended by six months. This is the fifth extension given to the probe panel.
Constituted by the UP government and led by retired judge of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Vishnu Sahai, the commission is set up to probe the reasons behind the Muzaffarnagar riots which left 63 dead and thousands on the streets.
As per a notification issued by Principal Secretary Debashish Panda, the term of Sahai commission has as given a six month’s time till August 8, 2015 to submit its finding.
The riot-hit victim alleges that the commission is handling the situation in an inept manner due to political pawns.
Asma Saifi, a 17-year-old girl who is living in Soran camp of Shamli said,
“Repeated extension given to the probe panel is a clear indication that the state government doesn’t want to reach any conclusion about the reasons behind the riots, let alone take a corrective measure. There are two dozen girls in this camp living with their parents. All these girls used to attend school before the riots. But now we are confined to this camp where there is no facility.”
“The frequent extension given to Sahai Commission is surprising. Nobody from the commission has come to us to record our statements. I fail to understand what this panel is doing. May be that the government wants to linger on the inquiry till 2017 Assembly elections”, said Mohammad Yasin (74), another riot victim living in Soran camp.
The Commission which was initially constituted for two months is now has been extended for six months.
