July violence, deaths carries on in Afghanistan

Kabul, July 27: While July has been named the deadliest month for NATO in Afghanistan, nearly two dozen people including a foreign soldier have been killed across the country.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement that a foreign soldier died of wounds suffered in an attack by insurgents on Saturday in southern Afghanistan.

However, the alliance did not reveal the nationality of the soldier or the exact location of the incident.

In a separate incident, three local security guards were killed when a mine exploded in the volatile southern Helmand province, a hotbed of Taliban insurgency and the target of recent military offensives.

Also, two Afghan army soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb attack in eastern Paktika province, according to Afghan officials.

This is while Afghan troops backed by foreign forces killed 16 Taliban linked militants in the same region near the Pakistan border.

Violence this year has reached its highest level since the US first ousted the Taliban from Afghanistan in 2001.

NATO casualties in the country have hit record highs in July, which has been the deadliest month for foreign troops since the US-led invasion eight years ago.

Nearly seventy foreign troops have so far been killed in insurgent attacks across Afghanistan this month.

Meanwhile, civilians have been the main victims of violence in Afghanistan particularly in the troubled southern and eastern provinces where the main fighting is taking place.
