Haiti, January 21: Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, known as “Baby Doc,” has been banned from leaving the country following his return after 24 years.
“A flight ban has been issued against Duvalier. He is barred from leaving the country because there is a court order against him,” an unnamed Haitian judge was quoted as saying by AFP on Thursday.
While faced with a court investigation in Haiti, Duvalier had been scheduled to leave the country on Thursday morning.
The former ruler was, however, taken to a private home from his hotel, where he was staying due to health problems.
Duvalier has been accused of taking a huge amount of dollars when he was forced to flee the country for France in 1986.
On Wednesday, four Haitians also filed criminal suits against the ousted ruler on crimes against humanity, which were protested against by his lawyer.
Duvalier came to power in 1971 succeeding his father, Francois “Papa Doc” Duvalier.
