New Delhi, December 31: In a bid to end the logjam in Parliament over (JPC) probe into the 2G spectrum scam, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will Friday meet the leaders of the Left and other non-BJP opposition parties.
Today’s meeting comes a day after the Speaker held consultations with the senior BJP leaders. However she failed to achieve any breakthrough since the main Opposition was not ready to move an inch from their demand of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the 2G spectrum scam.
The main opposition party, instead, blamed the ruling coalition for the present deadlock over the issue.
As per reports, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, polit bureau member Sitaram Yechury and JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav are among the leaders who will be in attendance for today’s meeting.
Yesterday’s luncheon meeting convened by Kumar was attended by Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj and senior BJP leader LK Advani. At the two-hour meeting, both the government and the Opposition leaders agreed that the logjam was a matter of concern, but refused to give any concessions to the UPA government.
After the conclusion of the meeting, Kumar expressed optimism that the deadlock over the issue would come to an very soon.
“Both sides are very keen that the next session (of Parliament) should run in order … I am very, very optimistic on how the events will unfold,” she said was quoted as saying.
The entire Winter Session of the Parliament got wasted due to the stand-off between the Opposition and the government over a JPC probe into the spectrum controversy.
As a compromise, the Prime Minister later offered to appear before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which is examining the 2G spectrum scam as reported by the government’s auditor, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).
However, the Opposition has steadfastly refused to budge from the JPC demand.
