Joy in Palestine after a release of Ahed Tamimi

Ahed Tamimi, a 17-year-old Palestinian who was jailed for 8 months for slapping and kicking two Israeli soldiers outside her home was released on Sunday morning. She was released along with her mother, who was also sentenced to eight months but due to remission policy, she served three weeks short.

Tamimi and her mother were arrested by Israeli forces in December 2017.

After her release she saw a massive crowd waiting to welcome her, seeing which she broke down in tears as an emotional crowd welcomed her in the village of Nabi Saleh on Sunday. Later she was taken with her family to a meeting with the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, at his headquarters in Ramallah.

She thanked activists and the media for their perpetual support during her stay in prison by addressing the media. Later, she also visited the grave of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, where she laid a wreath and recited a prayer from the Qur’an.
