John gets 15 days in jail

Mumbai, October 15: Actor John Abraham, who pleaded guilty to injuring two cyclists in a 2006 rash driving case, was sentenced to a 15-day simple imprisonment by a metropolitan magistrate yesterday.

Abraham was also fined Rs 1,500, which was deposited in the court.

However, Abraham’s lawyer, B Robin, immediately applied for bail, which was granted.

Abraham was present when the judge pronounced the sentence in a courtroom packed with people who had come to see the Bollywood hulk.

Conspicuous by his absence, however, was one of the victims, Shyam Kasbe, who died of a prolonged illness a year after the accident.

Complainant Tanmay Munzi’s advocate said he would challenge the verdict in the Sessions Court soon.

Incident

On April 9, 2006, Abraham was riding his 1100 cc motorcycle in Khar-Danda when he collided with two cyclists coming from the opposite direction.

All three were injured in the mishap. The actor’s head had hit the edge of the pavement and he also
suffered bruises on his right leg.

Munzi had suffered injuries on his thigh and hand while Kasbe suffered a minor knee-injury. Abraham had taken the victims to the hospital and he had been admitted too.

Tanmay Munzi filed an FIR against Abraham soon after the incident, however, and the police had registered a case of rash and negligent driving and impounded Abraham’s bike.

On the day of the accident, Munzi had told, “Andhera tha aur hum logon ko kuch dikha nahin.”
