New Delhi: Hours after interrogating Jawaharlal Nehru University students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who have been booked on charges of sedition, the Delhi Police on Wednesday filed a status report in the High Court.
The report submitted by the police includes the alleged anti-national slogans which were raised in the varsity campus, the video of the incident that took place on February 9 and also accounts of the eyewitnesses.
During the interrogation that lasted for five hours, the Delhi Police asked the duo about the sequence of events, which took place in the JNU campus on February 9.
The police also asked them about their whereabouts during the incident. Both Umar and Anirban revealed to the police about their location when they were absconding.
The Delhi Police has made a plan based on which the two would be presented before the Magistrate, ensuring their safety.
The two JNU students, who surrendered late last night, have been placed under police custody at the South Campus Police Station.
The Delhi Police had earlier on February 20 issued a look-out notice against Umar and Anirban, and three other students Rama Naga, Ashutosh Kumar and Anant Prakash.
The High Court had yesterday issued a notice to the Delhi Police and asked it file a status report on the bail plea of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police is expected to oppose the bail plea of Kanhaiya in wake of the latest developments in the case.
Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi yesterday said the circumstances surrounding the JNU sedition row had changed and they were now opposing Kanhaiya’s bail plea as he is “bound to impact the investigation”.
Kanhaiya was arrested in a sedition case on February 12 after an event held at the JNU campus against the execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. (ANI)
