New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday is set to hear the bail plea of Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested on sedition charges.
Amid beefed up security in the high court to avoid any untoward incidents like in the Patiala House court, Justice Pratibha Rani will hear the bail plea at 10.30 a.m.
Kanhaiya had moved the bail plea on Friday after a lower court sent him to judicial custody till March 2.
Counsel Raju Ramachandra appearing for Kanhaiya had told the apex court earlier that the atmosphere of Patiala House Court is not safe for the accused and his lawyers.
“The Defence lawyers are not able to perform their duty in such a hostile environment. That is why the bail application had been moved to the Supreme Court,” he said.
However, the apex court asked his advocate to move the high court for bail, noting that bypassing the high court would set a wrong precedent.
The Supreme Court yesterday directed all concerned parties to share the reports among themselves regarding the violence at the Patiala House Court premises before the next hearing on March 10.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Soli Sorabjee requested the court not to make any observation, which may prejudice the proceedings pending before the High Court as JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea is set to be heard today.
In reply, the apex court said that they are not going to decide on the merit of the case but will only examine the reported violence at the Patiala House Court. (ANI)
