JNU councillor alleges that door of his room defaced

New Delhi: A councillor from JNU’s School of International Studies has alleged that the door of his hostel room was defaced and the national flag sticker pasted on it was torn, following which he has registered a complaint with the warden.

Arnab Chakraborty, who is pursuing his PhD in Latin American studies, has alleged in his complaint that he is “scared” and under “trauma” over the incident.

“I regret to inform you that door of my room in Mahi-Mandvi hostel was defaced with abusive slogans and a national flag sticker was torn. Though the perpetrators are unidentified, I am scared and under trauma over this incident,” he said in his complaint.

This is the second such reported incident in last two weeks, as on March 2, a female graduate student residing in the dormitory of varsity?s Koyna hostel had alleged that her belongings were thrown out and a poster “Reject ABVP” was pasted on her bed.

While the female student is an ABVP activist, Chakraborty has no direct links with any of the students? groups in the campus and was elected councillor as an independent candidate in the 2015 elections.

The hostel warden confirmed that a complaint has been received in this regard.

“The student approached the senior warden in the morning and he (warden) was very angry over the incident. The senior warden suggested the students to resolve the issues through a general body meeting.

“But that seems a bit difficult, So we have also suggested to the student that since we will not be able to ascertain who did the mischief and whether by outsider/s or insider/s, he can approach the authorities outside of the hostel as well,” hostel warden Gautam Jha said.

JNU is caught in a row over an event against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru during which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.

Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar who has been charged with sedition and is locked in an ideological battle with ABVP members on campus said, “I condemn this kind of abusive activity with any student. Any ideological differences can be resolved with debate and discussion and such kind of violent activities are condemnable.” PTI GJS DEY RG
