J’khand Cong leaders meet Sonia, discuss govt formation issue

New Delhi, July 16: Congress leaders from Jharkhand today met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and discussed the possibilities of government formation in the state, which is under President’s Rule.

The leaders met Gandhi and also apprised her of the status of membership drive and organisational elections in the state.

Sources in the party said that the membership drive in the state was affected due to the naxal problem and the Party President was informed of it. AICC in-charge for the state K Keshava Rao, PCC chief Pradip Balmuchu and CLP leader Rajendra Singh, who met Gandhi, requested her to take a decision soon on either of the two options of holding the election early or give a nod for the formation of an alternative government there.

Sources in the party said that a number of JMM leaders have pledged their support for a Congress-led government in the state as MLAs from no party want a fresh election.

“There can’t be a state without a government but when and with whom is the issue,” was the refrain of Rao when asked whether an alternative government is expected in the state.

“There are views for both the options of holding fresh election as well as forming an alternative government. They have their views but the decision will be taken by the High Command,” he said.

The state had come under President’s Rule after BJP withdrew support to JMM chief Shibu Soren-led alliance goverment after he voted for UPA during the cut motion brought by the opposition in Parliament.
