Major Gogoi was questioned by police after he was caught while trying to check-in a Srinagar hotel with a Kashmiri girl and a male who works for the Army on May 23. Jammu and Kashmir police detained Gogoi at the spot and handed him over to the Army.
He was in the headlines in April 2017 when he tied a 26-year-old youth Farooq Ahmad Dar, to the bonnet of his military vehicle as ‘as human shield’ to deter stone pelters from attacking his vehicle.
The regional political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have welcomed the indictment of Major Leetul Gogoi. J&K parties say that similar steps would be taken in other pending inquiries of human rights violations against Army and take it to a logical conclusion.
Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister and People’s Democratic Party chief wrote on Twitter.
Army initiating disciplinary action against Major Gogoi is a welcome step. Only hope that unlike Pathribal and Machil fake encounters, it is taken to its logical conclusion.
