JK Gujjars demand separate DD channel for Gojri

Jammu, November 29: An organisation in Jammu and Kashmir today demanded an exclusive Doordarshan channel in Gojri language, alleging the language was not represented in the daily broadcasts of the public broadcaster.

“We are demanding an all exclusive Doordarshan channel for Gojri language keeping in mind the aspirations of the Gujjars in Jammu and Kashmir,” Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation secretary Javaid Rahi told reporters here.

“Our community has been expressing strong resentment against the non-representation of their mother tongue in daily telecast by various channels of Doordarshan in the state, including Kashir Chanel,” he said.

The Centre has allocated more than Rs 400 crore this year for DD channels in Jammu and Kashmir but it is astonishing that DD does not telecast even a single daily programme in Gojri, Rahi said.

A delegation of Gojri writers will visit New Delhi during December to pursue the case, he added.
