Jharkhand: sheds, drinking water, toilets for daily wagers

Ranchi: Due to rising heat and the approaching monsoon, the state has decided to construct sheds and provide drinking water and toilet facilities for the daily wagers travelling from rural areas to the cities in search of work.

Chief minister Raghubar Das on Friday asked the deputy commissioners of 24 districts to sort out areas that need the shed and other facilities for daily wage labourers. He further asked them to prepare an estimate and send the proposal to the state labour department in a week, reported HT.

“Daily wagers who come from villages to cities every day have to sit on the footpaths under the scorching sun and during rains. We will provide sheds, drinking water and toilet facilities to them,” Das said while addressing an event on Swaccha Bharat Mission in Ranchi.

Not less than 5 million daily wagers across Jharkhand travel from rural areas to cities in search of work every day, says a report of state labour department.

The CM also announced to provide extra Rs 5000 for the construction of toilets for physically handicapped in the state. Another Rs 12,000 for the construction of toilets in the backward families of Jharkhand.

Das also asked the officials of the drinking water and sanitation department to make all the urban areas open defecation free in Jharkhand by October 2, 2017.

Jharkhand, by now has achieved 54% of its toilet construction target. A total of 25 blocks, 711 panchayats and 4,073 villages have been made open defecation free, claimed Das.

“We have constructed at least 8.20 lakh toilets in the financial year 2016-2017. Anyhow, we have to achieve our 100% target of construction of toilets by 2018,” the CM said.

He felicitated Ramgarh deputy commissioner Rajeshwari B for making Ramgarh the first open defecation free district in Jharkhand. Additionally, he supported deputy commissioners of Giridh, Lohardaga, Saraikela and Kharsawan for their works towards sanitation.
