Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee’s (JPCC) secretary S R A Rizvi Chhabban today charged the BJP-led Jharkhand government for “indifferent” approach to promote languages including Urdu in the state. “It is really ridiculous that the government has granted second official language status in the state to various languages including Urdu, Bengali, Santali, etc but did nothing for its promotion,” Chhabban, who is also the president of the Anjuman Taraqque-e-Urdu, East Singhbhum chapter, told newsmen. He alleged that the state of affair of Hindi is even worse than Urdu in Jharkhand owing to the negligent approach of the government. He demanded setting up an Urdu Academy and appointment of translator in the state. Chhabban regretted that no fund was allocated by the state government to promote languages. He threatened to launch a massive agitation after Diwali to mount pressure on the government to pay heed to their demands. The Congress leader expressed surprise over the omission of largely spoken Bhopuri and Maithili languages from granting the second language status. PTI
