Agra: A 45-year-old jeweller was shot dead by unidentified assailants near the bypass road here, triggering a protest by traders.
The victim was identified as Ram Kumar Agarwal, a resident of Balkeshwar colony who runs a silver shop in the Sarafa Market here, police said.
His family members said Agarwal was last night returning home on a scooter driven by his staffer when three persons riding another scooter had opened fire at him from behind near the bypass road here.
He was rushed to a nearby nursing home for where he was referred to another private nursing home but he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
Agarwal left behind his wife and two children.
The incident triggered protests by traders and shopkeepers who have threatened to call a bandh if police fails to nab the accused.
Police have formed special teams to crack the case, officials said.
The in-charge of Kamlanagar chowki, where the incident too place, has been suspended by SSP Preetinder Singh.
BJP city chief Vijay Shivhare said it was a government of businessmen and traders and no laxity would be tolerated.
The law and order situation should improve soon, he said.
