Jeweller shot dead in hold-up

New Delhi, April 22: A jeweller was shot at and seriously injured when he tried to resist a robbery attempt in east Delhi Thursday, police said. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

“The incident took place at around 8.45 p.m., when Ram Gopal Verma, 55, carrying a bag supposedly consisting cash amounting to around Rs.50 lakh, was heading towards his house at E-block of Shastri Park area on foot.

“He had barely walked a few hundred metres from his shop – Monu Jewellers – located at street number-8 at Shastri Park, when three armed men on two bikes, intercepted him and asked him to hand them over the bag,” said a senior police officer.

But Verma refused. The trio then allegedly tried to snatch the bag from his hands but he hung on and then they shot his thrice at point blank range. “Leaving Verma bleeding heavily on the road, they fled from the spot,” said the officer.

Verma,55, was taken to St.Stephen’s Hospital in a very critical condition and later succumbed to the injuries.
