Jeelani Peerak: an encyclopedia of heritage structures of the city

When talked about a good swimmer, noted sportsman, veteran journalist, secular personality of the country, an academician, a linguist, renowned politician and harbinger of peace and patriotism, then the name of Jeelani Peerak comes to one’s mind. Infact Jeelani Peerak is not a person, but a complete institution in himself; an institution in which Hyderabad culture dwells.

Mr. Jeelani Peerak has a remarkable memory. He is aware of every nook and corner of the city, indisputably he can be called the encyclopedia of heritage structures of the city.

In 1962 Mr. Peerak played important role in resolving civic problems as Congress floor leader in Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad. He represented India in countries like Malaysia, America, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Romania and various other countries on different candidatures. He has established more than 100 social, industrial, educational and games institutions.

He expressed concern over wiping out of heritage structures in Hyderabad. He mentioned several wells, lakes, kuntas and ponds which have been obliterated. He cited Siasat report regarding construction of temple on Sultan Bowli L B Nagar. The renowned swimmer lamented that today the youth have been distanced from games; the vast grounds have vanished and the concrete forest has replaced the open grounds.

Mr. Jeelani Peerak is also the founder secretary of Elders Council of India.
