Jaya moves HC on defamation case against her by Dayanidhi Maran

Chennai, June 23: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Supremo Ms J Jayalalithaa today moved the Madras High Court praying that a defamation case filed against her by Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran be quashed.

In her petition she submitted that Mr Marana filed a defamation case against her with a malafide intention and to attract the attention of the public, She sought the High Court to call for all the records pending before the CMM Court and quash the same. Ms Jayalalithaa also sought the court to grant interim stay for the summons issued by the CMM for her appearance in the court on July 1.

The minister had initiated criminal defamation proceedings against the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on May 12, for her claim that there was large scale misuse of high-end official telephone lines allotted to him. He personally went to Egmore Magistrate Court and lodged a private complaint with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Sethumadhavan, against Ms Jayalalithaa. In his complaint, he submitted that on May 10 Ms Jayalalithaa had made a “defamatory and derogatory” speech against him, accusing him of misusing the special telephone lines allotted him.

The CMM ordered summons to Jayalalithaa and directed her to appear before the court on July 2.

Against this, Ms Jayalalitha filed the writ petition.
