Japan’s jobless rate unchanged in January

Tokyo, March 01: The Japanese government says the country’s jobless rate was 4.9 percent in January, unchanged from December.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate matched an average economist forecast by Kyodo news agency.

The result indicates that a corporate recovery could be starting to trickle down to the labor market. December was the first time in 10 months Japan’s unemployment rate fell below 5 percent.

The government also said Tuesday that average household spending in Japan fell 1.0 percent in January compared to a year earlier.
