Japan backs U.N. nuke disarmament statement for first time

Japan has, for the very first time, endorsed a United Nations’ statement on nuclear disarmament, expressing deep concern about the “catastrophic consequences” of atomic weapons and opposing their use.

A New Zealand-led initiative drew a record 125 supporting countries, roughly two-thirds of the 193 member states of the UN, the Japan Times reports.

Earlier, Japan has declined to back similar statements three times in the past not finding it compatible with its security policy, the report added. (ANI)
