Panchayat Raj Minister K Jana Reddy on Thursday stated that he would approach Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy over the High Court verdict limiting reservations for Backward Classes in the local body elections.
Talking to media persons at his chambers in the State Secretariat, Jana Reddy said that he would appeal the Chief Minister to convene a Cabinet meeting to discuss the implications of High Court ruling on reducing reservations for BCs in the local body elections. After the Cabinet meeting, he said that the government would also explore the legal options after consulting the State advocate general.
Apart from this, he said that he would suggest the Chief Minister to convene an all party meeting to discuss over the issue. Based on the discussions, the Chief Minister would take a final decision on the reservations issue for BCs.
Stating that the government would go ahead with the elections as per the High Court orders, he reminded that some States such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra have brought constitutional amendments to provide more reservation for BCs in the local bodies although the Supreme Court has fixed the quota at 50 per cent.
