New Delhi: Giving in to the demand of protesting students, the Jamia Millia Islamia University has finally announced that it would not allow Israeli delegates to take part in events on the campus in future. A day after the publication of reports regarding the attack on Jamia students by ‘hired goons’, the university also stalled disciplinary action against five students who were served show-cause notice for taking part in a protest against the participation of Israel in a campus event.
According to Telegraph India, after the administration gave assurance that it would not allow Israeli delegates to take part in events on the campus in future, the students called off the agitation on Wednesday evening. They had been on strike for the past 10 days. They were demanding a bar on Israeli delegates.
Students of Jamia Millia Islamia University on Tuesday had alleged that they were attacked by ‘hired goons’ when they were protesting against a show-cause notice issued to five students a month ago.
Before ending the protest, the students had a meeting with chief proctor Waseem Ahmad Khan and other faculty, alumni, and officers from the Jamia Nagar police station.
Varsity PRO Azeem Ahmad released an agreement on four demands including legal action against those who assaulted the protesters on Tuesday, withdrawal of show-cause notices issued to five students, no disciplinary action against those involved in protests since August 5 and most importantly no Israeli delegate will participate in any programme. It was signed by Khan and representatives of the students’ groups, including CPIML-Liberation’s All India Students Association and the Dayar-i-Shauq Students Charter.
