New Delhi, March 15: Jamia Millia Islamia faculty members and administrative staff today staged a dharna here pressing the government to grant minority status to the university in clear terms to allow the institute reserve 50 per cent of seats in each course for Muslim students.
Members of Jamia Teachers’ Association (JTA), Jamia Administrative Association and Jamia Minority Status Coordination Committee held the dharna at Jantar Mantar to press for their demand of recognising the university as a minority educational institution in clear terms.
“We want the government to recognise Jamia Millia Islamia as a minority educational institution in clear terms,” JTA President N U Khan said, adding, “ambiguities remain in the minority status that the university enjoys at present”.
Khan said if their demand is accepted then 50 per cent of the university seats will be reserved for Muslims.
