Jamia parcel bomb blast leaves one injured

New Delhi, April 13: A low – intensity parcel bomb exploded at Jamia Nagar in south- east Delhi on Monday, leaving one person wounded.

The blast took place around 4 pm when Mohammad Uzair, 45, opened a parcel containing some explosive substances in his house.

Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: “ Somebody reached the house with a gift packet in which some explosive was concealed. As soon as the person opened the packet, there was a mild blast.” The police have ruled out any terror angle.

Personal enmity has been suspected as motive. “ Uzair is a businessman. It appears that somebody tried to harm him because of enmity,” a police officer investigating the case said.

Mohammad Samim, a local, said: “ There was a loud sound and we rushed to his home. Uzair was lying at the entrance of his house. He was bleeding profusely.” Samim added that Uzair was taken to Holy Family

Hospital by some neighbours from where he was referred to the AIIMS. Another police officer said the victim had received injury in the upper half of his body.

“ It appears that the explosive was locally made and there were small steel and glass material along with some explosive substance.

The condition of the victim is stated to be stable,” the officer added.

The police recorded statements of Uzair’s family members. Preliminary investigation revealed that Uzair came downstairs after somebody called him.

“ A delivery boy told him that it was a gift packet which probably came from the Laxmi Nagar area of east Delhi. The boy left the place after handing over the packet,” the officer said.

The explosion in the heavily- crowded colony of Jamia Nagar sent the police into a tizzy. Several police officers rushed to the spot, raising the curiosity of local residents.

Vehicles of the Crime Investigation Team and the Bomb Disposal Squad also reached the area.

The police have registered a case under the Explosives Act and investigation is on.

“ I don’t know who came with the gift packet. I rushed here after I came to know the matter. However, it does not look like an act of terror,” Ismail, a local resident, said.
