Jamia organisations seek 50% reservation for Muslim minorities

New Delhi, October 13: Demands for 50 per cent reservation of seats for Muslim minorities in Jamia Millia Islamia today gained strength with six organisations, including the Jamia Teachers&apos Association (JTA), passing a resolution in this regard.

The other associations are Jamia Administrative Staff Association, Jamia School Teacher Association, Shafikur Rehman Kidwai Association, Jamia Old Boys Association and the organisation of the elected university teachers.

These associations held a meeting in the university today and passed a resolution, saying that the academic council and the executive council of the university need to take appropriate steps to ensure that 50 per cent of the seats are reserved for the Muslim minorities.

The university at present has 25 per cent reservation for the pass-outs from the feeder schools. It gives reservation to SC and ST students.

JTA President Prof N U Khan said the HRD Ministry in 2006 issued a directive to the university to take appropriate steps to”admit students from Muslim minority community to the extent of 50 per cent”.
