NEW DELHI: The administration of Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) University has again restricted the hostel timings for women students back to 9 pm creating uproar among students.
Following a powerful protest in March, Jamia extended hostel curfew timings from 8 pm to 10.30 pm for the women residing in its hostels but has again restricted the entry and exit.
In the new prospectus put up Wednesday evening on the university’s official website, the administration has announced, “No resident would be allowed to go out of hostel premises after 9 pm.”
The Jamia administration also issued a strict ban on holding any “protests, petitions and signature campaigns.”
The prospectus also added a new clause, saying, “I will not indulge in any protest or Signature Campaign against Hostel Rules, Regulations or timing. I accept that freely and fully. If I fail to abide by these my accommodation in the hostel can be cancelled immediately.”
“The curfew timings are changed again which is unacceptable. The administration agreed to our demands in March and even signed the memorandum,” Sumaiya Mohammed Ahmad, a third year BA LLB student at Jamia, told The Quint.
The decision to bring the hostel timings back to 9 pm was taken after many parents concerned about safety of their daughters, said Jamia spokesperson.
“The 9 pm curfew timing is quite generous. It is far more relaxed than at other girls’ hostels like in Indraprastha College (IP) and Lady Shri Ram College for Women. If some students don’t want any restrictions, they are free to seek accommodation elsewhere. The rule relaxation after the protest was a contingency to put a plug on it,” the spokesperson said, reported Indian Express.
