‘Jallikattu’: SC set to hear intervention pleas

New Delhi : The Supreme Court set to hear on Wednesday intervention pleas seeking vacation of its stay on holding ‘Jallikattu’, bull-fight sports, in Tamil Nadu.

After the SC stayed a Central notification, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promulgate an ordinance to facilitate holding of the traditional sports.

“On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu, I urge you to take immediate action in this regard,” she said in a letter to the Prime Minister.

Stating that sentiments of the people should be respected, Jayalalithaa said arrangements have already been made by organisers all over the state for conducting Jallikattu.

The Centre had on January 7 issued a notification enabling conduct of Jallikattu in various parts of Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebrations, following a request by the Chief Minister.

“On receipt of the notification, circulars were sent to the District Collectors regarding arrangements to be made for the conduct of Jallikattu, though strictly in accordance with the conditions and safeguards indicated in the notification. On this basis, arrangements have been made by organisers all over the state for the conduct of Jallikattu,” she said.

“As the SC has slapped an interim stay on the notification, Jallikattu now cannot be conducted,” said Jayalalithaa. (ANI)
