Jaipur NGO providing prosthetic limbs to Afghan war victims

Jaipur, April 21 (ANI): A non-government organisation in Jaipur, Rajasthan, organised a camp where it provided prosthetic limbs, crutches and wheelchairs for Afghan War victims.

The camp, which has been sponsored by the UAE Government, aims to donate artificial limbs to war victims in Afghanistan.

“We had organised this in Afghanistan long back and are thinking of doing so again. We have people in India and Pakistan who run our centres with our assistance, so there will be five people from there, twenty from here and I will personally take them. Talks are continuing with the Afghani government and they seem quite interested. The funding is being provided by UAE and the aim is to fit one thousand legs in one month and this will be the fifth camp,” The chief patron of the organization, D R Mehta, told mediapersons on Sunday.

“Overall in the last one year we have gotten 64,011 people and all of them free of cost. Stay is free, food is free, treatment is free, consultation, foot, crutch, and cycle all of it is free and if they need then the money needed to commute to home is also provided. They are the poorest people in the world, there foot gets cut and they cannot walk, they cannot earn and they get no support at home so they lose their self-confidence. We give them their leg again,” added Mehta

The organisation has previously organized several camps in Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan and received a very enthusiastic response.

Officials of the organization were of the view that these artificial limbs produced in Jaipur could play a major role in strengthening of relations between India and Afghanistan.

A specially abled and a beneficiary of the organization, Krishan Bal, told reporters that he was very grateful and happy as the artificial leg had given him a new life.

“Earlier, I was fed up with my life and wondering what to do and how to raise my children. But, when they fixed up a leg for me here, I felt like I had been given another life, and I am very happy,” said Bal.

So far, around 5000 Afghan war victims have benefited from the famed Jaipur Foot, and officials hope that the number continues to increase. (ANI)
