Jail products to be supplied to Punjab schools, government offices

Biscuits, snacks and artefacts made by jail inmates in Punjab could soon be supplied to educational institutions and government offices across the state, a minister said Thursday.

“Punjab government is seriously contemplating the move to supply the artefacts, biscuits and namkeen made by inmates of Central Jail, Ludhiana, to government educational institutes and offices across the state,” Punjab Jails Minister Sohan Singh Thandal said during his visit to the Ludhiana Central jail.

Applauding inmates for being engaged in constructive activities, Thandal said that inmates in the jail were preparing one quintal (100 kg) of biscuits of five varieties and more than 50 kg of namkeen everyday in the bakery unit.

The unit was established by the jails department at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh.

Thandal said that bakery products prepared in this jail bakery have been supplied to other jails across the state.

He said that since demand for the jail manufactured products, including furniture, soap and tents, was growing, it is likely that jail products are supplied to government educational institutes, offices and universities.
