Jail for drunken driving on ‘Holi’ day

New Delhi, March 18: You may land in jail on the day of ‘Holi’ if you are caught driving under the influence of alcohol in the capital.

This is the warning Delhi Traffic Police has issued for Holi revellers this weekend.

Announcing the traffic arrangements made for Sunday, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg said those found driving under the influence of alcohol are liable to be arrested and their vehicle impounded besides imposing a fine.

“About 400 Traffic special checking teams will be stationed across Delhi to check drunken driving. Special checking teams with alcometers and speedometer will be deployed at major intersections. Drunken driving is now punishable with a jail term and suspension of driving license besides fines,” Garg said.

This year till March 15, a total of 3,388 drivers were prosecuted for drunken driving, out of which 560 drivers have been awarded jail term.
