Hyderabad, February 02: Former Congress MP Jagan Mohan Reddy would undertake a three-day march beginning on February 7 to demand clearance of an ambitious irrigation project at Polavaram in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.
Jagan would traverse a distance of 70 km during the yatra in East and West Godavari districts in the coastal region, his aide Congress MLA P Subhash Chandra Bose said.
The Polavaram project was conceived as a multipurpose scheme providing irrigation to 4.36 lakh hectares, water supply to towns and villages en route, and generating hydel power with an installed capacity of 960 MW. The project envisaged construction of an earth-cum-rockfill dam.
There has been a demand for according national status to the project and almost all major parties organised agitations over the issue.
Praja Rajyam Chief Chiranjeevi held a yatra earlier demanding national status to the Polavaram project and thus get the funds for the project from the centre.
Jagan, who quit Congress last year, has been holding protests over various public issues like better relief for farmers hit by heavy rains, alleged adverse impact of the award of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal and price rise.
His fast in Delhi on the Krishna Waters issue created a sensation with about 30 ruling Congress MLAs joining him.
Speaking on the occasion, he said he is doing a favour to the Congress by asking the MLAs loyal to him not quit their posts for now.
