Security has been tightened in Hyderabad with YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy expected to appear before a CBI court a day after he was arrested in the alleged disproportionate assets case. His party, the YSR Congress, has called for a bandh across Andhra Pradesh.
Ending days of speculation, the CBI made the move of arresting Jagan Reddy on Sunday evening after the third day of questioning. With the CBI having filed three chargesheets in Jagan’s disproportionate assets case, this was the fifth arrest after the state excise minister was recently taken into custody. Within minutes of the CBI confirming the arrest, Jagan Reddy’s family arrived at the CBI office staging a dharna protesting against the YSR Congress chief’s arrest.
Speaking with CNN-IBN before leaving for the third day of questioning on Sunday and hours before his arrest, Jagan accused the CBI of deliberately delaying the questioning at the behest of the Congress. “They want to keep me away from campaigning and postpone the by-elections,” Jagan said.
Fearing a backlash from Jagan supporters, the state police has put state security on alert with prohibitory orders in Hyderabad in view of Jagan being summoned by the CBI trial court on Monday.
