Jaffer Sharief to quit Congress?

Being denied a ticket to Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat by the Congress, Mr. CK Jaffer Sharief is said to have threatened to quit the Congress party. When asked whether he would join the JD(S) he said, “Why shouldn’t I ? After all JD(S) is a secular party. I am not looking for personal gains,” here on March 12.

Mr. Sharief was unhappy with the decision of the party not to field him as their candidate. He said, “Struggling for a ticket is not necessary for me at this age of 80+. My intension is to get Bangalore Central back to the Congress. Justice Kuldeep Singh, who headed the Delimitation Commission had told me that this seat is for a Muslim”. This is not the first time that the leader has threatened to leave Congress. In 2008, he had quit over inadequate representation to minorities in assembly tickets.

Even as rumours were rife about Mr. Sharief’s next political move, former PM, Mr. H D Devegowda is said to be ready to accept him in the JD(S) fold. Mr Gowda said that the Congress had forgotten the services of a loyal senior Congress leader. His sacrifices for the party have not been considered appropriately. “I welcome him to JD(S) since ‘service to people’ was their common motto”, he added.

Mr. Gowda did not clearly state that whether Mr. Sharief would be provided with a JD(S) ticket for the upcoming Loksabha elections or not. On the other hand, Mr. Sharief has not disclosed his final decision about quitting the Congress.

Party in opting for youth congress president instead, was to make it easy for the leaders to dictate terms to such new entrants.
