IUML seeks action against college

Belgaum. August 21: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Belgaum district, has submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner demanding that the government take immediate action against Shri Venkataraman Swamy College (SVSC) of Bantwal for not allowing Ayesha Ashim to enter the college wearing a veil and a headscarf.

The memorandum urges the government to protect the constitutional rights of Muslims by taking action against the principal and the college authorities.
It also demands that the government aid to the college and the registration of the institution be cancelled.

IUML national treasurer Dastgir I Agha, district president Aijaz Ahamed M Lodhi, vice-president Imam Husein H Dalwai, Ibrahim M Shamsheer, M Aslam, and M Pachapuri were among those who handed over the memorandum to the district administration.

Ayesha, a 19-year-old Muslim girl from a Mangalore college lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor of Mangalore University on Tuesday alleging that the college prohibited her from wearing a headscarf to college. The first-year student of SVSC complained that the college authorities did not raise the issue at the time of admissions in July when she attended the interview in a burkha.
Her father, B Mohammed, has said that the ban has forced his daughter to miss classes for the last 12 days.
