Italians glad to see Berlusconi open to prosecution

Rome, October 12: The majority of Italians agree with a court ruling that has stripped gaffe-bound Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi off his immunity from prosecution.

In an IPR poll published by Italy’s ANSA news agency on Sunday, 59 percent of those surveyed agreed with the court’s decision.

In another poll conducted by ISPO for the Corriere della Sera newspaper, 72 percent said that they disagreed with the immunity law to begin with.

The controversial premier pushed for immunity upon taking office last year. The court said that it violated the basic principle of everyone being equal before the law.

Following the ruling, Berlusconi accused the top court, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and the media of being part of a leftist conspiracy to bring down his premiership.

Sixty percent of the Italian public believed the 73-year-old conservative leader had overreacted to the decision.
