Aligarh: Thousands of students staged a protest against attacks of Hindutva forces on students of Aligarh Muslim University. The attack is being condemned from various quarters. Amidst the criticism, former vice chancellor of the university lieutenant General Zameeruddin Shah strongly condemned police lathi charge and said it was not lathi charge but ‘lathi attack’. Students were attacked and gheraoed from all fronts. He defended the students saying the university students are not anti-national and do not possess pro-Pakistan sentiments. He released a video in this connection.

It must be noted that Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Aligarh, Satish Kumar Gautam is behind the row who triggered a national controversy over a portrait of Mohammad Ali Jinnah at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

University spokesman Shafey Qidwai defended the hanging of the portrait saying Jinnah was the founder member of the university and he was conferred with lifelong membership of the union. He had donated for the university. It must be noted that Mohammed Ali Jinnah’s portrait is hanging in AMUSU’s hall since 1938.
