IT raids on Lucknow gutka manufacturer: income worth Rs 18 crore detected

Lucknow, June 27: The two-day search and seizures by the Income Tax Department on Lucknow-based gutka manufacturer and hotelier Chaurasiya & Sons has detected undisclosed income worth over Rs 18 crore.

The Group runs the Pukar gutka business under the banner of Durga Trading Company. The cash, jewellery and the Fixed-Deposit Receipts seized were estimated to be worth over Rs 7 crore.

A senior IT official said that the proprietors accepted that they had not disclosed income worth Rs 18 crore. The report against the Group is being drafted and action will be initiated under appropriate sections of the IT Act, he said.

Major discrepancies were also found during searches at the offices of the transporters, packagers and the laminators having business dealings with the Group. The documents revealed that the service providers had been under-invoicing the gutka consignments in their ledgers.

The scanning of the bank accounts of the proprietors and their family members is still on.

The Director General, IT Department, Lucknow, S C Gangwar and Additional Director (Investigation) Meenakshi Singh had supervised the search operations at 30 locations in Lucknow. Searches were conducted at five of the transporters’ offices in three districts.

The Chaurasiyas’ Khurshed Bagh residence and offices in Aminabad and hotels were raided.
