IT official caught taking bribe in Guntur

Hyderabad, March 06: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials arrested a deputy commissioner of income tax and an auditor for demanding and accepting Rs 4 lakh as bribe.

An official press release here today said the deputy commissioner had demanded the money from the complainant through the auditor for accepting the valuation report of a clinic- cum-residential building on the Amaravati Road in Guntur district.

The complainant, who completed the construction in 2004-05, showed its value as Rs 48 lakh in his returns but the income tax authorities assessed the said building to be worth Rs 1.13 crore.

Finding the official valuation very high, the complainant had it valued by an independent approved valuer who assessed the value of the building as Rs 79 lakh. Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner asked the complainant to pay a bribe of Rs 4 lakh for approving the latest valuation and asked the complainant to hand over the bribe to the auditor.

Acting on a complainant, CBI officials laid a trap and caught the two while taking the bribe, the statement said.
