ISRO to set up ground station in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, December 29: National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) director V Jayaraman on Tuesday said that the Indian Space Research Organisation will set up an integrated multi-mission ground segment in Hyderabad at a cost of Rs 35 to 40 crore.

This ground station is expected to be operational by June, 2011 and would able to receive all the satellite data so that the country will be able to supply 1000 products to users directly each day. At present, the NRSC is able to deliver space products within four to five days of receiving the data.

The new segment is expected to boost productivity to such an extent that these products would be delivered by around 12 hours and if needed some emergency products could be supplied within one hour.

Dr Jayaraman told the gathering at a conference in Bangalore that at least 30 earth observation satellites will be launched by the country during the next decade.

The NRSC comes under the Department of Space (DoS). It is responsible for remote sensing, satellite data acquisition and processing, data dissemination, aerial remote sensing and decision support for disaster management.

Dr Jayaraman further revealed that the ISRO would launch a series of Resourcesat, Cartosat, ocean and atmospheric satellites, including the Cartosat-3 with 30 cm resolution.

The Research Organisation would launch the Resourcesat-2 by early February as a replacement satellite for Resourcesat-1 which gives us 5.8 metres, 70 km multi-spectral data.
